Job Description Summary

As a Field Service and Technical Advising – Generator Specialist, you will provide on-site technical direction to customer-owned utility and industrial power plants for their Turbine Generator Systems and to perform services and maintenance activities on customers’ site/property. You are responsible for reviewing plant engineering documents and P&ID’s, troubleshooting of plant systems and equipment, planning, organizing, integrating and direction of resources such as labor, tools and materials as required to complete the work scope according to contractual requirements. Your primary responsibility as the Generator Specialist is to safely accomplish the maintenance and repair of the heavy-duty generators used in power generation applications. You may be assigned other duties to help proactively drive our GE vision and align with our organization’s core values.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform on-site expert advice, inspection and testing of the generator field and stator utilizing the latest technology Electrical Testing (resistance, PI, HiPot, tan delta, shaft voltage, off-line partial discharge); Shorted Turn Detector Installation & Testing; GHM System Installation / Commissioning / Servicing / Training; Partial Discharge Installation & Testing; RSO Testing and more.
  • Knowledge in robotics inspections which includes In-Situ Gen Inspection MAGIC / DIRIS (visual, wedge tightness, ELCID)
  • Direct and perform repair or inspection procedures utilizing the latest electronic communication, references, and documentation technologies.
  • Recognize, predict, and document potential generator failures.
  • Provide constructive and proactive feedback to clients and internal customers.
  • Determine and implement effective methods of inspection and testing of generators.
  • Establish and maintain networks with Engineering team to ensure that product knowledge transfer is established and that expertise within the generator portfolio is fostered.
  • Working knowledge of basic electrical circuits and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of prints/print reading, such as manufacturing drawings, P&IDs, and schematic drawings.
  • Pre-outage planning, procedures recommendations, including tools and parts required for outages.
  • Execution of projects, including generator field and stator rewinds, general generator repairs, and inspections.
  • Support warranty administration and troubleshooting issues.
  • Provide relevant support and information to Tendering, Sales and Engineering if required.
  • Mentor, coach and share knowledge and experiences to develop others.
  • Ensures that all specified records are correctly taken, reviewed, and approved.
  • Ability and willingness to work holidays, weekends and overtime as required by field assignments.
  • Extensive travelling and flexibility to travel globally when required on short notice (Have an approved passport)
  • Maintain strong safety and quality mindset to assure the executed work reflects the technical requirements within GE safety and quality standards.
  • Able to work without supervision and able to execute tasks when engaged on solo basis
  • Prepare timely and accurate technical reports for customer records and a reference for future outages

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with experience in a Field Services role within Power Generation
  • Experience in power plant maintenance, turbine generator maintenance or power plant equipment installation/commissioning
  • Previous Experience with high voltage testing and Doble will be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated progressive, responsible experience with various types of turbine generator equipment and site accountabilities is required
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication and computer application proficiency
  • Excellent communication, planning, technical, interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Capable of creative thinking, quick problem solving, innovative, team player and self-motivated.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience and trained on GE, Alstom, or other OEM equipment is preferred
  • Strong attitude to manage relationships with customers, concerning technical and contractual aspects.
  • Follow up all quality aspects according to six sigma approach and GE QA manual and procedures.
  • Working knowledge and application of EHS rules.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to sell GE products to the customer
