The Barclays story

Barclays traces its ancestry back to two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, who were doing business in Lombard Street, London in 1690. In 1736, Freame’s son, Joseph took his brother-in-law, James Barclay on as a partner, and the name has remained a constant presence in the business ever since.

Barclays was built over centuries. Our longevity is an extraordinary achievement, especially against the backdrop of multiple financial crises, international conflicts, and the agricultural, industrial, and now technological revolutions.

By injecting new capital and new partners into the Norwich Bank, they effectively distanced it from the bill broking business just one month before it crashed. While the very public failure of one Quaker business was highly regrettable, it had clearly been beyond saving, and ruthless action had been needed to prevent other businesses going down with Overend, Gurney, and Company.

Recruitment Process

The Barclays recruitment process mainly consists of four stages as below.

1. Online Application

While the application process depends on the role, there are some constants. You'll need to start with an online application form, and we'll ask about your contact details, education, and work experience. You'll also need to upload a CV, so it’s a good idea to have this ready.

2. Assessment

If your application is successful you'll be invited to complete a number of online assessments or take part in a telephone interview. Our online assessments are carefully designed to measure the skills and capabilities you'll need to be successful in our roles, and they'll also give you an idea of what our roles involve.

They usually take about an hour and you’ll always have the opportunity to practice first. Our telephone interviews give us the opportunity to find out more about your experience and technical skills, and give you the chance to ask us questions. They usually last about half an hour.

3. Interview

If your telephone interview or online assessment is successful, we’ll invite you to a face-to-face interview. We want you to be free to choose an interview time that suits you, so we’ll give you some options and ask you to choose one of them online.

At your interview, we’ll be keen to explore your motivation for the role, your fit with our values, and the key skills and behaviors (competencies) you need for the role.  To find more information on Barclay's competencies, download the competency definitions document relevant to the type of role you are interested in here:

You can demonstrate core competencies by giving us examples of when, why, and how you have used these skills in the past. This tells us that you have the potential to apply these skills if you work with us.

Interviews for some roles might involve additional assessments - for example, role plays, case studies, and presentations. We’ll only assess skills that are relevant to the role, and we'll give you a full brief beforehand that will tell you what’s going to happen.

To help us to move your application forward quickly, bring supporting documents to your interview. You'll need your passport (which confirms you can work in the UK) and driving license or bank statements (which verify your current address).

4. Outcome

If you’ve been successful at the interview, we’ll ask for some additional information so that you can complete our screening process. We’ll tell you more about the screening process during the application process, as the way it works depends on your location.
