The Gamuda Berhad story

Founded in 1976, Gamuda Berhad is a publicly listed company that began as a construction-based enterprise. Today, it is one of Malaysia's leading infrastructure developers with expertise in engineering and construction, lifestyle property and township development, and infrastructure concessions.

The company is a turnkey contractor with Built-Operate-Transfer expertise. Put simply, Gamuda Berhad is assigned projects by the private or public sector to design, build, operate, and maintain facilities for a certain period. The company then transfers the facility to the owner at the end of a concession agreement. Gamuda Berhad's projects are present across Malaysia, Far East Asia, South East Asia, the Middle East and Indochina.

Some of Gamuda Berhad’s most notable projects include the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel in Malaysia, the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit in Taiwan, the Dukhan Highway in Qatar, the Electrified Double Track Project from Ipoh to Padang Besar, the SPRINT Expressway in Malaysia and the New Doha International Airport.

As of 2019, the company displayed a net profit of RM706mil as opposed to the RM539mil it made in 2018. This is largely due to strong property sales in Vietnam that padded the impact of its lower income from the construction division. The company expects most of its sales in 2020 to be driven by overseas property sales in Vietnam as well as the progress of Mass Rapid Transit Line 2 (MRT2).

Culture

Gamuda Berhad puts a premium on diversity and inclusion, believing that celebrating differences is key for employees to achieve their full potential. The company expresses value for women through a variety of programs. The Woman Career Comeback program aims to recruit and retain women coming from a 6-month career break.

The company is also committed to having at least 30% women on its board while offering female-centric benefits packages that include childcare subsidies, extended maternity leave, support facilities, and childcare leave, among others.

To encourage employee engagement, the company organises various activities every year to build relationships and foster a sense of belonging. The company’s in-house Sports Club allows employees to participate in annual trips, social events, and sporting activities at subsidised rates.

Social contributions

Gamuda Berhad’s corporate social responsibility focuses on human capital development, community and social development, the environment, and quality, safety, and health. The company believes that by 'building right', it can positively impact surrounding communities and reduce environmental impact.

To promote education, the company's foundation arm, Yayasan Gamuda, focuses primarily on educational aid and community improvement. The foundation also offers scholarships to exceptional Malaysian students.
