The Telekom Story

TM dates back to 1946 when the Telecom Department of Malaya was established. The first long-distance microwave link was used by the corporation in 1962 to launch Subscriber Trunk Dialing (STD) between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The business increased its nationwide microwave network the following year. The Telecommunication Department of Malaysia, also referred to as Jabatan Telekom Malaysia in Bahasa Malaysia, was created in 1968 when the Telecommunications Departments of Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak united (JTM).

This moniker would be used by the business for about two decades. Telekom Malaysia completed a significant rebranding initiative in 2005, choosing TM as the new brand, and was the first company to introduce 3G services in Malaysia. Additionally, in 2005, the company bought a 27.3% stake in PT Excelcomindo Pratama in Indonesia. The High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) project at TM was launched in 2008 after the Malaysian government and TM signed a Public-Private Partnership Agreement. The first HSBB (wholesale) customer, Wi-Net, signed up after the indicative Terms & Conditions for the service were made public in 2009.
