The British American Tobacco Story

The British-American Tobacco Company Ltd. was established in 1902 as a joint venture between the Imperial Tobacco Company of the United Kingdom and the American Tobacco Company of the USA. The parent companies agreed to transfer trademarks, export businesses, and foreign affiliates to the joint venture and to refrain from conducting business in each other's local markets. The British American Tobacco company was founded in nations as divergent as Canada, China, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, but not in the United Kingdom or the USA after James Buchanan Duke was named its chairman. In China, BAT acquired a factory from W.D. & H.O. Wills, one of the forerunners of Imperial Tobacco, in the Pudong neighborhood of Shanghai. By 1919, the Shanghai plant was manufacturing more than 243 million tobacco products weekly under the direction of James Augustus Thomas, a native of Rockingham, North Carolina, in the United States. After BAT's breakthrough with the "Ruby Queen" cigarette brand, Thomas maintained a close working relationship with the neighborhood Wing Tai Vo Tobacco Company.

The BAT Ethos, which underpins its culture and directs how the company executes its plan, is an embodiment of how people function. The Group's culture emphasizes fostering talent from within while challenging and assisting the high-performing executives who would also oversee the execution of their strategy.

Because the company's future relies on biodiversity and forest resources, it also wants to achieve net zero deforestation of managed forests throughout its supply chains for tobacco, paper, and pulp.

Controversies

In 2008, Duncan Bannatyne of BBC Two studied the company's marketing strategies in Africa, focusing on how it primarily targets younger Africans through branded music events, competitions, and the selling of single cigarette sticks.
